My Thoughts On Life

It’s not Motivation we need; It’s Momentum!

We have all listened to a speaker/presenter that gave a motivating talk that made us feel good and maybe even stirred up a want or desire to go out and take action on a goal.

I travel a lot giving me time to listen to different podcasts and audio books. As I listen, my mind starts thinking wow, that’s cool or interesting. I should do something with that information.

What I have come to realize is that I will get motivated for the moment, but rarely does it lead to anything. Motivation is a feeling, and feelings can come and go in an instant. It’s not that motivation is bad. No, it’s a good thing; it’s just fleeting. You have it one moment, and the next, you don’t. I can’t count the times I have told myself I will do this or that when I feel like it when I get motivated, and, you guessed it, it rarely happens.

On the other hand, if we have something we want to accomplish, whether we are motivated or not, movement creates momentum, and momentum creates achievement. It’s not what you feel like that will get you there. It’s what you do. A good friend of mine has a saying that I love – You can’t train a horse standing still. Life goals happen when we create momentum.
We create momentum when we have something we want to accomplish and commit to taking consistent action, whether we feel like it or not. The two most challenging parts of creating momentum are getting started and sticking with it to the end.

Most of us never take that first step of getting started, and a high percentage of us that do start quickly lose momentum when the going gets tough because it will be challenging at times. The ten percent that makes it to their goal resolve to stick with it to the end.

What do you want? What do you want to go after? What is it you want to achieve or have? What is your goal? It is hard to get there if you don’t know what or where you are going.

Get started: how to start on your goal. What is one thing you can do today to get started? What is one thing if you did it, would give you the most return?

Just start, don’t make it so complicated you get overwhelmed. Overwhelm paralyzes action! Simplify and begin with small action steps, do something, it doesn’t have to be perfect. If you want to gain momentum, you have to get moving.

All the best, Jack
